Currently enrolled in WGU’s Network Administration BS program, previously at Volt, with ten years at Overstock.com and five years at Olympus Aerial Surveys, I have worked hard to advance my own skills while finding innovative ways to improve business. Over the last two years at Bluehost, I have learned WordPress, MySQL, cPanel/WHM, network diagnostics, Exim, and other web technologies. Bringing customer service and Linux skills from past employment, I have worked hard to succeed and grow in my position. I am currently working toward earning Cisco certification. It is my desire to work hands-on with the technologies I am learning about. BlueHost.com has already advanced my knowledge of server systems and hosting technologies. I am excited to see what else I can learn as I progress in the company. My last assignment as a help desk technician for Novartis, through Unisys and Volt, allowed me to gain hands-on knowledge in a global information technology environment. Each day I helped Novartis employees set up and troubleshot a large variety technology, from VPN connections and virtual machines to desktop productivity applications. It was a rewarding challenge to quickly find the right solution and satisfy our users. While working with Overstock.com’s Merchandising department, I created an entirely new department, refurbishing off-lease and returned computer and consumer electronic equipment. We partnered with Microsoft for operating systems. While managing the people and technical aspects of the department, I gained considerable experience in system imaging, maintenance, repair, and team management. I've worked extensively with SuSE and Gentoo Linux, creating a Samba-based imaging and diagnostic environment for Windows XP. A segment of that environment was dedicated to a mix of SuSE and Windows XP workstations for employees. The network used a combination of technologies, including OpenLDAP, Kerberos, Bind, NFS, DHCP, and Samba. Both Microsoft's OPK toolkit and an in-house-developed LiveCD, using the DD sector copier, provided our imaging solution. My duties at Olympus included maintenance of hardware and software, custom programming of various CAD packages including AutoCAD and Microstation, developing and documenting standard procedures, recommending new hardware and software, upgrading hardware and software, enhancing office communications, troubleshooting computer problems, training employees, and creating solutions.

It’s been a long while since I’ve given web hosting much thought. The last few years have centered around storage area networks, virtualization, and the nitty-gritty of what goes on inside an All-Flash-Array. Recently, I’ve found myself wanting to get back into a few hobbies and interests, including web hosting and WordPress. There are a… Read More

While looking for sites to learn Python, I came across a fun little site that teaches the basics of Python by positioning 3 dimensional blocks to create various structures. The site can be found at: CodeTheBlocks.com. Some lessons give you a problem to solve at the end. I wanted to share some of the solutions… Read More

Huh, It’s been 5 years since I’ve posted anything here. Didn’t realize that much time has gone by. There have been life events and such in that time. I’m still in Tech. The technology has changed, but not my involvement. I moved out of Web Hosting support and have been doing support for storage arrays.… Read More

I’ve been running several game daemons off my primary internal server for a while now. Some of these game daemons are accessible from the Internet. From a security stand-point, this is not a good idea. So I’ll be creating a new KVM virtual private server (VPS) instance for game daemons and placing it in the… Read More

I’ve temporarily taken down the Citadel message board. Having changed ISPs, I don’t have a dedicated IP address for the home server right now. The site is hosted on a shared server, provided by BlueHost. As Citadel requires root-level access, it can’t be hosted on a shared server. I now have two copies of the… Read More
